"We may
, following a suggestion by Herbert Paul Grice's (in "Meaning"
, Oxford Philosophical Society, 1948)
, think of the actions
of depositing and of accepting a deposit as complicated "utterances"
: you intend
that what you do shall be understood."
"Then it will not seem so extraordinary to say
that a later "utterance" (viz., appropriating the entrusted money) contradicts a former one (viz., accepting a deposit)."
