Grice´s surname is spelt "Grize" in French. There is a logician, called Grize, who wrote extensively on "logic and conversation". In German, it is sometimes spelt "Griss", as in this logician who wrote on "negationless" logic.
And then there´s David Hume. His surname was spelt "Home", but in Scotland, there is an intrusive "j", by which "home" becomes "hume". Odd that, but true.
Kant, on the other hand, was born "Cant". His grandfather was a Scots emigre. Kant endured a lot of mockery as a boy when he was refered to as "Meister Sant". The Germans, unable to pronounce the "k" sound of "cant", liquified it. He opted to go with hoi polloi and changed his fine Scots surname to the way it is spelled, mostly, today.
So, what´s your favourite philosophical mispelling?
