Grice lived in California, so, like J, he should have been familiar with stuff. As Kramer notes, one thing is cross-examination (and cfr. direct examination). Another is "redirect examination" -- cfr. Grice on the electron, the atom, and the quark.
Here is the wiki for "redirect"
"Redirect examination is the trial process by which
the party who offered the witness has a chance
to explain or otherwise qualify any damaging or accusing
testimony brought out by the opponent during cross-examination. Redirect
examination may question only those areas brought out
on cross-examination and may not stray beyond that boundary.
In Australia and Canada the process is called re-examination."
