Grice on "free"

S is able to act freely iff S is able to act self-consciously on a suitable
range of desires to realize expansive self-concepts for their own sake.

Grice's preparation for the third Carus lecture was  concerned almost exclusively with freedom as a source of value. Grice pursued this line of enquiry rather than that of creature construction as being for some the more interesting and productive.
