H. P. Grice, "By the principle of Occam's razor, if the class of appearances fulfils the purpose for the sake of which the concept of 'thing' was invented by that prehistoric Anglian metaphysician to which our common sense is due, economy demands that I should identify this 'thing' with the class of its appearances. The procedure is precisely analogous to that of Peano's, which swept away from philosophical mathematics the useless menagerie of metaphysical monsters which which it used to be infested!"
