Here Grice speaks of senses, and some senses being more popular than others:
'something is'
--- has these two putative senses, but it is the stronger sense, being more useful, which should be more popular.
Grice notes:
"If there IS a SENSE of (C), "Something is not F"
such that for this to be TRUE some REAL thing
must fail to be F, the knowledge that in THIS sense
something is NOT F is more useful than the knowledge that
something is NOT F in the weaker sense.
So, to utter "C" on the strength of the non-existence
of a "is misleading". (to say the least).
