The Times's obit for Grice read, "Amateur cricketer and professional philosopher" (NOT in that order).
J suggested that I read P. Feyerabend's bio in wiki. It included:
"It turned out that one of the bullets had hit him in the spine. As a consequence of this, he needed to walk with a stick for the rest of his life."
In comparison, Grice had it lighter. As a Royal Navy, his ship WAS hit by the Germans, but it survived (did not sink). Otherwise, Grice (having been dead) would not have been able to develop as an amateur cricketer -- or professional philosopher, for that matter.
