Grice defines 'dominance'

"We may now definte the important related notion of 'dominance'. A term th dominates a segment phi iff phi falls within the scope of at least one of the occurrences, in phi, of th. In other words, th dominates phi if at least one occurrence of th in ph bears a subscript higher than that attaching to any logical constant in phi."

Grice adds:

"Dominance is intimately connected with existential commitment".
