H. P. Grice on Reichenbach on "Admunsen flies to The North Pole"

(Ex)(x consists of the fact that Amundsen flew to the North Pole)

-- and polyadic variance

This is Reichenbach's example in ""Logical form and logical equivalence"
 -- discussed by Davidson.

Grice agrees with Davidson on this point.

----

Does he?

No!

----

"If one is a constructivist, one would properly
reject Davidson's alleged emendation of
Reichenbach."

For Grice, Reichenbach's (R) proposal can be emended otherwise.

Grice contrasts

i. Admundsen flies to the North Pole.

and

ii. A flight by Admundsen to the North Pole takes place.

Reichenbach holds that (i) and (ii) are logically equivalent.

But, as Grice notes, they are not!

Only (ii) is about an event -- and might be rendered by (R).
