In the development of his theory of conversation,
Grice is much exercised by the status of the
categories of psychological concepts.
He questioned
whether the maxims were the result of entering
into a quasi-contract by engaging in conversation,
simply inductive generalisations over what people do
in fact do in conversation, or as he [GENIALLY --
SPERANZA] suggested in one rought note,
just
"special cases of what a decent chap should do."
