Where Science and English meet

--- in their dislike for Names!

Surely if I want to learn English, I'm not expected to be passed a book of names. Names do NOT belong in a language!

--- In "Reply to Richards", Grice presents an argument, a weak one, against Naturalism. He says that Science delivers on 'what there is' -- and that there are issues as to what authority that claim relies on.

It seems to me that there is an area where English and Science meet: their avoidance of 'names'.

Note that in "Vacuous Names", Grice is trying to be polemic. As he writes:

Davidson and Hintikka had already an issue of the Synthese Library to honour Quine, and they thought:

"Hey, Grice defended a dogma against Quine; perhaps Professor Quine would be pleased to have a contribution by Grice".

Grice starts his contribution with:

"I hope that Professor Quine will

not find it inappropriate that my

offering to him should not take the

form of a specific discussion of

his oeuvre, but rather, of an

attempt to explore all that he

opposed -- notably singular terms

including, names".

(slightly altered -- but the gist is there).
