A and B have been discussing, before the cocktail party, whose were were expecting to attend. C is in the 'know' about Marmaduke Bloggs (that he has been invented by the journalists) and is listening:

C: Well. Someone won't be at the party.
A and B: WHO?
C: Marmaduke Bloggs.
A and B: But -- it is in HIS honour.
C: That is as may be -- but he doesn't exist. As it happens,
