Introduction and Elimination of Dominance

Grice finds the notion of dominance basic, and provides rules for its introduction and elimination.

He defines this 'important related notion' for any term theta.

A term theta DOMINATES a segment phi

iff

phi falls within the scope of at least

one of the occurrences, in phi, of theta."

----

Gloss:

"Theta dominates phi if at least

occurrence of theta in phi bears

a subscript higher than that

attaching to any logical constant in

phi."

----

He finds 'dominance' [to be] "intimately connected with existential commitment" -- as that discussed by Warnock, in "Metaphysics in Logic" -- a rarely quoted essay but which predates many of the points made by Grice vis a vis Quine in this essay.
