This is the slide Grice presents for Marmaduke Bloggs:
1. To say, "Marmaduke Bloggs is at this party" would be to say something which is not true. Mutatis mutandis: "Pegasus flew to kill the Chimera".
2. To say, "It is NOT true that Marmaduke Bloggs is at this party" would be to say something which IS true.
Obvious: if p is false, ~p is true. This pretty transparent a neo-Strawsonian finds hard to understand!
3. To say "Marmaduke Bloggs is not at this party" would be to say somehting which is true".
Obvious: for 'it is not true' translates, sort of, as ~p.
4. Marmaduke Bloggs is not at this party.
Similarly, Pegasus never flew.
---
5. Grice writes: "Marmaduke Bloggs can be truly said not to be at this party".
And the square circle can be truly said to be one of the stupidest French ideas ever!
---
6. Grice writes: "Someone (viz. Marmaduke Bloggs) can TRULY be said not be at this party.
--- Similarly, if it's too hot it's unsensible to wear panties?
---
7. Grice writes: "Someone is not at this party (viz. Marmaduke Bloggs)."
Neither is Marilyn Monroe, alas.
