H. P. Grice on R. M. Hare
H. P. Grice quotes from R. M. Hare.
"Think of one world, W1, into whose fabric this or that value is objectively (or absolutely) built."
"Then think of another world, W2, in which this or that objective (or absolute) value has been annihilated."
"And remember that in both worlds, W1 and W2, the people in W1 and W2 go on being concerned about the same things — there is no difference in this or that subjective (or relative) value."
Now Hare asks:
'What is the difference between the states of affairs in these two worlds?'
Can any answer be given except
'None whatever'?
----
Cf. N. Coward, "Relative values."
Note that R. M. Hare actually uses 'scare quotes' for 'subjective value': "'subjective' value."
This is important.
Hare's implicature is that 'subjective,' as applied to 'value,' is otiose.
