Aristotle on the "multiplicity" of "being" -- Grice contra Owen

No SUCH MULTIPLICITY!

Use TWO words if you must: izz and hazz

By uttering 'a izz b,' the utterer means that p.

By uttering 'a hazz b,' the utterer means that q.

G.E.L. Owen in Aristotle on the Snares of Ontology (ASOopts for the supposition that semantic multiplicity attaches to 'be' (meaning 'exist').

Grice don't [sic]!

Surely Grice would NEVER calll it 'semantic' --

There might be an implicatum there somewhere!

Or not

PART II to "Studies in the way of words" is indeed called, "Explorations in semantics AND METAPHYSICS"!

Cfr. Grice's analysis of the 'adverbial' phrase of 'French' in 'French poem' (unlike his other example, 'fat philosopher,' where 'fat' is strictly adjectival.
