I read elsewhere that "H. Grice" who arrived in San Francisco, USA, in 1850, is the right Grice. However, immigrants that went by Greiss were not: they were the Hun.
"The name 'Le Grice,' has three possible meanings."
i. The first is a direct transition from Old French and simply means The Grey. Probably referring to hair ie "The Grey-haired Ones".
ii. But if we keep digging it also means "Swine-herd" or "Pig Farmer". This translation is similar in both Middle French, Old French and even Icelandic.
iii. The third meaning is "The Well-Nourished One" and may be a play on the name Le Gros, meaning "The Big" .
