As the DIZIONARIO ETIMOLOGICO DELLA LINGUA ITALIANA shows, it's barbara latinita which had 'gris', and that's Germanic to the backbone, meaning what it means:
"griso", ladin "grish"; prov. fr. sp., por. "gris"; ingl. "grizzle"; m. a. ted. gris [che nulla ha di comune con graó, mod. grau]: dall'ant. sass. = a. a. ted. "gris", canuto, mediante una forma "griseus" che trovasi nella barbara latinita (IX sec.). Deriv.: "grisatoio", "grisetto".
