I have elsewhere considered Grice's fascinating remarks on questions ("Who killed Cock Robin?") in Aspects of Reason. In WoW:270, after his doubts that
Give these flowers to your wife
is rendered by
"Make it the case that there is one and only one person who is married to you, who is female, and who is given thse flowers by you."
----
he considers the erotetic case:
"Was your wife at the party?"
In symbols: God knows.
Grice writes.
"And
"Was your wife at the party?"
"again does NOT seem as if it would be
properly represented by:
"Was it the case that you have at least one wife
and not more than one wife and that no one is both
your wife and not at the party?"
Grice's gloss:
"There does not seem to be the feeling [among who? Speranza]
that the person who asks whether your wife was at the
party is, among other things, inquiring whether you
are nonbigamously married."
How can someone be as genial as Grice?
--- Wait till you apply the square brackets device (along with the numeric subscript indicating device) to questions like that. Or not.
