Grice on "good"

" " To say that something is 'good'
is to recommend it " "

-- that Grice quoted the quote in WoW:9.

This short entry not to discourage my entry in "Reluctant Cannibal". You see, I'm retrieving posts I've sent elsewhere, and they can only confuse. One day I'll spend a WHOLE good day at the Swimming-Pool Library and retrieve things which I haven't retrieved yet and which matter.

Till then, there's this quote above by Grice that sums it all. He is criticising Hare, of course. And the analysis via implicature is too obvious to be true. And it _is_, true.

In any case, just don't get misled by "Reluctant Cannibal". For Grice it was serious that

"good"

may involve some root-canal with the square root of 'good', i.e. he was into serious study of phrastics and neustics and things.

Unlike Blackburn, he would not have given emotivism _one_ hoot of consideration.
s
This also to mention some pragmatics of communication, money. Etc. One tends to be too polite online, and tends to discuss what one is offered to discuss. Hence the Grice Club, the place where you can be as impolite as one wants (within the margins of Grice, 'be polite' of course) in your absolute freedom to discuss -- Grice. Just joking.
