Grice is often referred to as "the legendary tutor".
Indeed, he has originated his own mythology. And since he would apply 'etymological strict rules' in order to comply with Occam's razor ('do not multiply senses beyond neceesity') I propose a close look, auto-referential.
The OED has:
grice.
"Apparently, Cotgrave's assimilation of "grouse" to the French "grieche."
The etymology being from the Latin type "graecisca,"
i.e. fem. of "graeciscus", and see "Greekish"
[and "Ode on a Gricean urn," this blog]
"As in 'poule', perdrix grieche;"
"erronously taken by some etymologists to be the original of grouse."
1611 Cotgr.
Poule griesche, a moor henn;
the Hen of the Grice
