At times I have pondered Hayakawa-like when listening to political speech --or as they say now, "framing". And the politicians who win usually keep it simple--Obama's speech was a bit more effective than Bush's. But he sounded fairly "street" at times. That's what Vox Populi responds to--one reason the ..Heartland likes Miss Palin. She sounds like good country people, goldangit!
ReplyDeleteSound too eggheady and they send you back to New Haven or Boston or whatever. Same for like Schwarzenegger, who generally sounded primitive and macho. Overly eloquent and people think yr a bureaucrat, or worse, Englishman.
Note that most villains in US films...are the well-spoken types--Hannibal Lector. Iago. Good guys are strong and silent. Clint Eastwoods. Overly rhetorical characters are either serial murderers, or....lavender
