Grice's Modified Occam's Razor in Aristotle

Speranza

Well, not in Aristotle but in B. F. Loar's edition of Grice's posthumous "Aristotle" paper in PPQ.

Grice's example is "French" -- as in "French poem".

Grice distinguishes blatantly between SENSE and MEANING.

Thus, "French" has one SENSE; but "French" can or may be said to have meaning-1-in-context, and meaning-2-in-context.

He is using the very English "mean" which Grice prefers to Peirce's kryptotechnic "signify". And perhaps right he is, too!
