Cavell's two references to Grice in "Must we mean what we say?"

Speranza

The first concerns Bergson on Kant -- 'to deposit' vs. 'to hand'. Cavell refers to Grice's apt idea of considering 'acting' as 'uttering'. Thus, the action of depositing is seen as a 'complex utterance.' In this way, Bergson's criticism of the analytic approach by Kant can be answered.

More relevant is the second quotation, where Cavell considers Grice's general approach to meaning via intending.
