Urmson fu prof. nell’univ. di Saint Andrews (1959-78) e nella Stanford University (1975-80).

Esponente della filosofia analitica, ne ha delineato le caratteristiche e i metodi nella sua opera più celebre Philosophical analysis (1956; trad. it. L’analisi filosofica).

Importanti anche i suoi scritti The emotive theory of ethics (1968) e Aristotle’s ethics (1988).

Ha diretto The concise encyclopedia of west-ern philosophy and philosophers (1960; 2^a ed. 1975).
