Grice -- cited by Dale, R. E.

-- by J. L. Speranza
----- for the Grice Club

RECENTLY, R. B. JONES WAS directing our attention to Dale's work at

http://www.russelldale.com/dissertation/

and we were fortunate to have Dale's own contribution to the club on that.

For the record then.

I will just review the content of as per 'abstract' in the site above.

"Chapter 1" introduces Grice.

is a general introduction by way of a discussion of H. P. Grice's important contribution to this subject."

"Chapter 2" cites from (as Dale 'traces' Grice) Welby, and Gardiner, among others.

--- It is with those historical aspects we've been concerned, but surely Dale's thesis has a broader range. Chapter 4, for example, deals with a "compositional-semantic theory" and its alleged place in the discussion of these issues. Chapter 5 is a very beutiful "critique" of the "convention"-based theories of meaning in D. K. Lewis and B. F. Loar. The final chapter is most critical of Grice himself. I hope to address some of the topics elsewhere. Meanwhile, enjoy!
