"alethic" -- from "A Dictionary of Grice"

I have come across some discussion, elsewhere, on the Max Black anti-Gricean take on 'metaphor': it's all about the 'alethic' side to metaphor.

I am reminded that Grice was _wedded_ to the notion of 'alethic'. This of course derives from the Greek

αληθέια

Veritas

-- the etym. of which is colourful: a-, private prefix, 'leth', veil, the unveiled one.

In any case, while Grice would have even gotten bored of reading about aletheia as a Lit. Hum., he possibly was very excited, too, upon realising that his friend, Georg H. von Wright had coined, as recognised by the OED:

alethic.

Now, Grice is never sure what to oppose to 'alethic'. HE proposes, 'practic': "alethic reason" versus "practical reason". Mmm. (I like to oppose theory to 'praxis'). In any case, a playful pseudo-pretentious lexeme that we know pleased Grice.
