the man in the street, the philosopher in the library

--- PPQ, vol. 67, p. 16 Grice generalises, on Davidson's behalf, his account of

Shaun kicked Shem.

The result is totally unappealing.

Grice:

""Action-verbs are to be construed as
predicates involving one more place
than YOU think they do" seems hardly
satisfactory."

Plus,

"to substitute for 'you', the phrase
'the man in the street', or the phrase,
'the philosopher in the library' does not
seem a large improvement."

Genius!
