"A Very Rational, Intelligent" Pirot: Was Parot

Grice punned thricely with 'pirot'.

Carnap, in 1942, Intro to Semantics, wanted to be witty and said something he thought was nonsensical -- without, typically, checking with the OED, who had an entry for 'pirot':

Pirots karulise elatically (if you let them).

Grice knew about Locke's debate over the 'very intelligent, rational' parot owned by Prince Maurice. From Locke 1969 -- below -- and the rest is legend:

Prince Maurice, "D’ou venez-vous?"

Parrot, "De Marinnan"

Prince Maurice, "A qui estes-vous?"

Parrot, "A un Portugais"

Prince Maurice, "Que fais-tu la?"

Parrot, "Je garde les poulles"

Prince Maurice, "Vous gardez les poulles?"

Parrot, "Oui, moi; et je scai bien faire"
