The Three Grices

Unlike Witters, it is fairly easy to distinguish the stages in Grice's philosophy.

The first Grice -- the early Grice. This is Grice since the day he was born (March 1913, in Staffordshire, Harborne) to the day he graduated as MA Oxon Lit Hum cum laude. We believe that there is such a stress on students that life does not count for them until they get a degree. "Only the poor learn at Oxford", Arnold commented. Grice was not one, but still --. He did play football and cricket, etc, but all this early paraphernalia is merely paralipomena for his postlegomenon.

The second Grice. This is vintage Grice. It's Grice as 'tutor in philosophy', compleat with degree till that fatal day when he took the plane from Heathrow to settle for 'good' or bad in the USA. This is the Grice of the play group, as member and president.

The third Grice. This is the Grice arriving in Harvard, to deliver the 1967 William James, the Grice who saw that Castilian castle on the Berkeley hills and bought it, and the Grice which died in Aug. 1988. R. I. P.

Etc.
