Like Socrates, Grice was obsessed with 'right'.

From the OED,

"the Latin root, "leg-," as in "lex" (noun), is not *now* generally
believed to be cognate [with English 'law'] (being referred to the root "leg-" of
"legere" to gather, read, and to the Greek "legein", to gather, say).

The Short/Lewis Latin Dictionary (Oxford UP) provides a Germanic cognate:
"lesen":

lĕgo , lēgi, lectum (I. gen. plur. part. legentum, Ov. Tr. 1. 7, 25), 3, v.
a. cf Greek legô, logos, logas, etc.;
Lat. legumen, di-leg-ens, neg-leg-o, etc.;
