An Italian Answer to the Italian Question

I once ordered M. Arnold's boring book, "The Italian Question". I found the title interesting (Similarly, I once ordered a book, "How to pain ships", seeing that I found S. Tuke's paintings monotonous, and I was slightly disappointed that it meant, the title, paint-paint, rather than paint-on-canvas).

Lawrence comments of his idle days in Tuscany:

What is this?
It's a flower

was the Italian reply. Otiose, seeing that Italians are said to go on the verbose side. Lawrence laments: "I knew it was a flower. I just wasn't sure if it was a wild one".

When Levi-Strauss's book was published in England, the idea of "Wild Pansy", for "Pensee Sauvage", arose -- but it was disqualified "on account of some uninvited implicatures that may gotten in".
