Hot from the Press!

--- We are discussing cupboards (vide Jason, "Words for the Radio", this blog).

"A cubboard," Austin explains ("Philosophical Papers," ed. posthum. by Warnock and Urmson) "is like a sideboard, only different."

"For what they are worth, they are called, when boiled, hot press in Hiberno-English".

The purpose of a boiler cupboard is to prevent damp and to dry wet clothing. Other names include (in Ireland) "hot press".

There´s hot press if your clothes are wet.

ObG: "There are biscuits in the hot press, but toasted."
